About the origin of our icy favorite treat – ice cream, were written many stories. One version, which sounds the most accurate is that its native country is ancient China. Chinese emperors were the first people known to have eaten ice cream. They mixed snow and ice brought from the mountains, and adding the mixture of oranges, lemons and pomegranate grains, as well as wine and honey.

With this delicious dessert the rulers were refreshing while relaxing. It is claimed that their recipes and methods of storage were kept secret, which was declassified only in a book from the 11th century.

But historians remember that Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) loved to eat snow flavored with nectar and honey.


Europe learned for the frozen dessert in the 13th century from  the famous traveler Marco Polo (1254-1324), who brought the recipes from China. These recipes had been donated by a Mongolian Khan and the delicious result was very similar to sherbet. It immediately entered into the list of the most exquisite desserts of the Italian aristocrats. The recipes for making the dessert were long kept secret, and the court chefs took vows of silence for everything related to its preparation.

The real dessert with ice and cream was invented when Napoleon III was on the throne. The passion for ice cream taken over the Germans and Austrians. The Italians, with their inexhaustible desire to mix the most incredible products invented the variation of ice cream, assorted with the addition of fruits, nuts, liqueur and bits of biscuit. In America, the recipes for ice cream arrived with the British settlers.

Until XVIII century the ice cream was made exclusively from fruits. For the first time the ice cream is mentioned in Paris in 1774 This is the first city that began to produce and sell ice cream. This happened in 1676, when 250 Parisian pastry united and created a corporation for the production of ice cream, but the original recipe was still considered a  secret. After 100 years in Vienna was issued a cookbook that contains various recipes for ice cream. A copy of the book is preserved to this day and in it can be found many interesting recipes such as ice cream with cream on top and inside with added cinnamon, vanilla and maraschino (cherry liqueur); with lemon, bitter orange, strawberries and raspberries. In fact, the book constitutes a serious scientific work and it contains theological and philosophical explanations for the phenomenon of a freezing water.

On the eve of World War I in the United States already had a classification of ten types of ice cream, producing hundreds of variations. In 1921 in New York is patented the famous “Eskimo” called by its creators “The Eskimo Pie”.


You will probably be surprised by one of its properties. Scientists from Harvard have discovered that ice cream helps women to conceive. Products containing whole milk, improve ovulation. In the course of the study were examined women who had exactly this problem. In more than 60% improvement observed only once in their menu was added and serving ice cream. The study has involved more than 18,000 women who were monitored for a decade.
