20th Century Fox is apologizing for the inappropriate promotional image for X-Men: Apocalypse, which shows Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac)  strangling Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence in the role).

“In our enthusiasm to show the villainy of the character Apocalypse we didn’t immediately recognize the upsetting connotation of this image in print form. Once we realized how insensitive it was, we quickly took steps to remove those materials. We apologize for our actions and would never condone violence against women.”

Fox has taken measures to get rid of these promotional materials and the studio seems to understand what they have done wrong. The image does show the “villainy” of Apocalypse, but without the context of the movie trailer (where the scene has been featured), it doesn’t work as intended.

Actress Rose McGowan shared her criticising opinion about the image on her Facebook, and  in an interview with The Hollywood Reportershe said, “There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled. The fact that no one flagged this is offensive and frankly, stupid.” She confront 20th Century Fox directly, asking, “Since you can’t manage to put any women directors on your slate for the next two years, how about you at least replace your ad?”

One Twitter user wrote: “The appeal of the X-Men poster showing Jennifer Lawrence being choked is that battery can be fun?”

Spoiler! Our Nerdy team want to add something… We absolutely disown violence against women, but we also want to say that to the detriment of the movie (and not because she’s a female character), Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg  worked overtime to make Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique a central character and guiding force in X-Men: Apocalypse. The scene with Apocalypse is important because it transforms another strong, female character (Storm) from a villain into a hero when she sees her idol being threatened by her leader.

“Apocalypse” opened at the top spot at the North American box office last weekend and has so far grossed over $285 million worldwide.

  1. “We apologize for our actions and would never condone violence against women.””
    are you serious…
1st of all, its 2 fictional characters being portrayed by actors in a movie
2nd, what is “…violence against women”, what happened to just violence

  2. So if it was a man being strangled it would have been okay? If you are against the violence in the poster, boy superhero movies are not your cup of tea but if you are against the fact that it was a women being chocked. Then you seriously have some misguided thought process to make that sense of the poster.

  3. I think I will hold my girlfriend up by the throat with one arm now that I saw a movie character doing it. I hope I don’t see any other violence anywhere…oh wait

  4. why is this an issue? Because rose (I don’t matter anymore and am irrelevant to the current entertainment cycle so I have to insert my big mouth somewhere) McGowan says so? Sack up 20th century fox! It apocalypse, he’s a BAD GUY! He does bad things like choking anti heroes. Over sensitivity to identity privilege is ruining everything, ever increasing political correctness is going rule over everything and everyone. The serpent has swallowed its tail and it’s only a matter of time before logic and reason are devoured.

  5. Wow. This is the most ridiculous complaint to date. Granted, as a promo poster, it isn’t exactly appealing in an artistic or commercial sense. It’s just ugly.

But holy crap! Violence against women? Really? Talk about a stretch. Sounds like people are just looking for things to complain about or searching desperately for a pulpit with which to stand upon. I’d understand if this was a film promoting violence against women, but it’s not. Maybe we should just make movies about people sitting in silence, without makeup, wearing gray, loosely fitted, long sleeved shirts and regular (not skinny) pants, in a room with their hands in their laps, just staring straight ahead, not looking at each other for 2 hours. Starring Rose McGowan. There. Nothing offensive. Good luck at the box office.

  6. I don’t understand the weird, waffling statement at the end. Do the writers not know what the word “detriment” means? Are they saying they don’t like Mystique as a main character? Wtf
