From the cover of National Geographic to prison

What happened with the Afghan girl with the green eyes?

Sarbani Gula

Each of us has seen the iconic cover of Steve McCurry for National Geographic, 1985, from which a young girl from Afghanistan – Sharbat Gula- pierces the readers with her beautiful green eyes.

Has Sarbani kept the innocence hiding in her eyes for all these years? Not according to the authorities in Pakistan, where Gula was arrested a few days ago because of illegal possession of national identity cards.

The girl who long ago became a symbol of the conflict in Afghanistan, today is a woman who forthcoming 14 years in prison and a fine of between 3 and 5 thousand dollars.

In 1985, when the first photo of Sarbani made in a refugee camp in Pakistan appeared, there were no evidence of the name or age of the girl with piercing green eyes. Sarbani Gula became the name behind the iconic cover in 2002 when the photographer Steve McCurry took up to find the “Afghan girl” and to photograph her again.
